Are we making progress?
By accepted definition, most South African cities are classed as ‘small’. There are six large cities and no mega cities. The metropolitan areas of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and Tshwane form the core of the country’s industrial heartland and include the Vereeniging–Vanderbijlpark–Vaal complex. The Gauteng cities, although defined as separate metropoles, form a ‘polycentric urban region’. The port cities of eThekweni, Cape Town, and Nelson Mandela Metro are also centres of significant economic activity. |
